Fellowship in Genomic Science and Health Equity
Program Overview
The 2024 fellowship in genomic science and health equity, cosponsored by the National Institutes of Health’s National Human Genome Research Institute (NIH NHGRI) and the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (FDA OMHHE), is no longer accepting applications for summer 2024.
The fellowship, which is up to three years, is designed to prepare fellows to use genetic, genomic and pharmacogenomic approaches to advance minority health and health equity and train them in the research methodology and medical product development processes that facilitate the delivery of drugs, biologics, and devices.
The fellow will gain unique experiences by working closely with mentors at both FDA OMHHE, the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) and NIH NHGRI, providing the opportunity to advance their knowledge of genomic health disparities and regulatory sciences.
Project Description
A crucial element of a forward-facing health equity approach in genomics research is one that focuses on increasing public trust, engagement, collaboration, and transparency and amplifying diverse voices and perspectives, to address the needs of diverse communities.
The fellow selected for this position will pursue research broadly related to:
- Fellows will gain experience in FDA OMHHE’s and NHGRI's Intramural Research Program efforts to increase availability of genomic data, demographic and clinical inclusion data.
- Fellows will gain experience in leveraging qualitative and quantitative methodology to understand and elevate the voices of diverse patients.
- Fellows will gain experience in understanding of barriers to participation in NHGRI Intramural Research and FDA clinical trials, including economic and social factors, for diverse patients.
The fellowship program supports the fellow’s research and training goals and prepares fellow for independence at an early stage of their research career. The fellow will be actively mentored by and collaborate with scientists at both FDA and NHGRI and be actively incorporated into research groups at both agencies.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.
- Have a masters or doctoral degree in human genetics, pharmacy, nursing, genomics, computational biology, medicine, cell or molecular biology, epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, social and behavioral science, or closely related areas.
- Have completed master’s degree within three years of receiving bachelor’s degree.
- Have fewer than five years of relevant research experience since receipt of most recent doctoral degree, for postdoctoral applicants.
- Have some knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods, excellent communication skills and fluency in both spoken and written English.
- Agree to up to three years of in-person participation in fellowship.
